The USA women's volleyball team started the third round of the Volleyball Nations League with a decisive 25-15, 26-24, 25-20 victory over France. This performance leaves the Americans with a 5-4 record, granting them a well-deserved day off before facing the Netherlands, who also sit at 5-4, on Wednesday night in Fukuoka, Japan.
Jordan Thompson's Stellar Performance
Jordan Thompson was undoubtedly the star of the match, delivering an impressive 17 kills out of the team's 46 total. Her contribution didn't stop there; she also added two aces and a solo block, hitting at a remarkable .370. Thompson's performance was a key factor in the USA's success, showcasing her ability to dominate the court and lead her team to victory.
Team Effort and Key Contributions
While Thompson shone brightly, the USA's victory was a team effort. Chiaka Ogbogu contributed seven kills, a block, and an ace, while Jordan Larson added five kills and three aces. Kelsey Cook, making her 2024 VNL debut, chipped in with six kills. The team's offense was well-rounded, with Dana Rettke adding four kills and an ace, and Kathryn Plummer making a notable impact in the third set with three kills in as many swings.
"We played as a cohesive unit today, and it showed on the scoreboard," said Lauren Carlini, the team's setter.
Defensive Prowess and Overall Performance
On the defensive end, Justine Wong-Orantes led with 13 digs, while Lauren Carlini contributed seven digs, three kills, and a block. The team's hitting percentage stood at an impressive .383, and they managed to serve up seven aces, despite committing seven serving errors. This balance of offensive firepower and defensive solidity was crucial in securing the win.
Looking Ahead
The USA team will have a day to rest and prepare for their next match against the Netherlands. With both teams holding identical records, this upcoming clash promises to be a thrilling encounter. The Americans will look to build on their momentum and continue their push in the Volleyball Nations League.
