The final edition of the Volleyball Challenger Cup is set to electrify Asia from July 4-7, with the Chinese city of Linyi and the Philippine capital Manila hosting the men's and women's events respectively. The stage is set for a thrilling competition as the rosters for both tournaments have been released, pending eligibility checks by the FIVB.
A Battle for Volleyball Nations League Spots
Eight national teams in each gender will compete in a single-elimination format, with the winners earning a coveted spot in the 2025 Volleyball Nations League. This will be the first edition of the VNL to feature 18 men's and women's teams, adding even more prestige to the Challenger Cup.
Key Players to Watch
In the men’s tournament, China’s outside hitter Zhang Jingyin will be a crucial player as the host nation aims for victory. Their quarterfinal opponents, Mexico, will rely on the leadership of outside hitter and captain Mauro Fuentes to pull off an upset.
Belgium's Ferre Reggers will look to dominate against Croatia, who will counter with their high-scoring opposite Petar Đirlić. The clash between Ukraine and Chile promises excitement, with outside hitters Evheniy Kisilyuk and Dusan Bonacic expected to shine. Additionally, Egypt’s Olympic-bound team led by opposite Reda Haikal will face Qatar, featuring setter Borislav Georgiev.
Women’s Tournament Highlights
In the women’s bracket, Belgium’s Britt Herbots, known for her scoring prowess, will take on Sweden. Although Sweden will miss star opposite Isabelle Haak, they will count on her sister, outside hitter Anna Haak.
Puerto Rico, captained by talented libero Shara Venegas, will encounter Kenya, led by charismatic opposite Sharon 'Chumba' Kiprono. Another intriguing matchup sees Czechia, led by captain Michaela Mlejnkova, against Argentina and their adept setter Victoria Mayer. The final quarterfinal pits Philippines, guided by setter Julia 'Jia' De Guzman, against Vietnam, featuring popular outside hitter Tran Thi Thanh Thuy.
