Pizzi has returned to Portuguese football, signing a two-year contract with "Estoril Praia" after leaving APOEL of Cyprus. The 35-year-old midfielder joins as a free agent following a season where he netted four goals in 24 appearances for the Cypriot club.
"I came to be happy. I want to help Estoril achieve its objectives, and also support the young players both inside and outside the dressing room," Pizzi explained in statements to the club's official media.
The veteran brings a wealth of experience back to the Primeira Liga, having previously enjoyed an illustrious eight-year spell at "Benfica" where he amassed an impressive 360 matches, 94 goals, and 94 assists. He also had a brief stint with "Braga" between 2022 and 2023.
Interestingly, Pizzi's career has taken him across several prominent European clubs. He's worn the shirts of "Atletico Madrid," "Deportivo La Coruña," and "Espanyol," while also having played for Al Wahda and Istanbul Basaksehir. Not bad for a player entering the twilight of his career!
The midfielder's trophy cabinet reflects his successful journey – one Nations League title, four Portuguese league championships, one Portuguese Cup, three League Cups, three Portuguese Super Cups, and a Europa League trophy with "Atletico Madrid." He also represented Portugal 17 times at international level.
"After a great season last year, I hope that this year we achieve even more and take Estoril Praia to new levels," added the player, who will wear his familiar number 21 jersey.
For "Estoril Praia," this signing represents a significant addition of experience, leadership, and technical quality to their midfield. The club, under manager Vasco Seabra, clearly aims to strengthen their position in Portuguese football. Can Pizzi's veteran presence help them climb the league table this season?
