Luciano Spalletti plans to discuss his future with Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina following Italy's embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Norway. The Italian coach didn't hide his frustration as the reigning European champions delivered a dismal performance.
"I am responsible. I need to change something too. We must analyze what happened," Spalletti admitted after the match. "We were not decisive enough in our actions, too soft."
The 65-year-old tactician highlighted several problems that plagued his team during the match. Italy lost possession too easily in the final third and stubbornly attacked through the center despite having opportunities to utilize their wingbacks. All three goals conceded came from situations where the Azzurri lacked character and determination.
Spalletti was particularly critical of his team's defensive approach: "Even when Sandro Tonali lost the ball in the final third before the third goal, we were sitting too deep and pressing with the wrong players in the wrong way."
Despite the poor showing, the coach made it clear he still believes in his squad. "This is a strong team, the best I have available right now," he insisted. "We need to perform better, but I will defend these players."
Interestingly, Spalletti mentioned his upcoming conversation with Gravina could be about his position. "I said I'll talk to Gravina. He gave me the opportunity to be head coach, and I'll always be grateful for that. But after that – he can act as he wants," Spalletti explained, hinting at potential changes.
As for the immediate future, Italy will face Moldova in their next match. Spalletti confirmed he'll stick with the 3-5-2 formation but plans to rotate several players. "We need fresh legs," he noted.
The defeat has serious implications for Italy's qualification hopes. "After today's result, another playoff is entirely possible," Spalletti admitted. "We need to give everything and avoid further mistakes to regain our chance at first place."
Can the Italian manager turn things around, or is his time with the national team already running out? The upcoming talks with Gravina might provide the answer.
