Diego Forlan, the former football star known for his goal-scoring prowess, has embarked on a new sporting journey. At 45, Forlan has swapped his football boots for tennis rackets and is making waves on the ITF Tour. This week, Forlan competed in an ITF MT1000 event in Lima, Peru, showcasing his versatility and athleticism.
From Football to Tennis: Forlan's New Chapter
Forlan, who retired from professional football in 2019 after a stint with Kitchee in Hong Kong, has since ventured into coaching, managing teams like Penarol and Atenas in Uruguay. However, his passion for sports did not end there. Forlan has taken up tennis, and his recent performances have been nothing short of impressive.
Dominating in Lima
Competing in the 45+ category, Forlan's journey in Lima has been remarkable. He started strong, defeating Chilean Gonzalo Carreno 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. He then faced Peruvian Jorge Hernandez, losing only one game to secure a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Forlan continued his winning streak by overcoming Pablo Rojas-Holch 6-3, 6-3, setting up a quarter-final clash with Brazilian Antonio Amaro da Silva Filho.
A Growing Tennis Career
This isn't Forlan's first foray into competitive tennis. Last July, while the world's top players competed at Wimbledon, Forlan was battling on a clay court in Montevideo, reaching the quarter-finals of a 35+ event. He then advanced to the semi-finals at a 40+ event in Punta Del Este and made another final four appearance in the 45+ category in Montevideo this February.
The Unique Lefty
Interestingly, despite his deadly right foot in football, Forlan plays tennis as a left-hander. Footage circulating online shows his impressive serve and forehand, prompting reactions from fans and commentators alike.
