Derek Still has officially been appointed as the new Southampton manager after the club's confirmation on May 25. The former coach steps into the hot seat following the team's relegation to the Championship after a disastrous Premier League campaign.

"I'm excited for the challenge ahead and understand the importance of bringing this club back where it belongs," Still reportedly told club media upon his appointment.

This appointment comes after a period of uncertainty at St. Mary's. On April 7, Ivan Juric departed the club following their relegation, which was mathematically confirmed after a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham. That loss marked a particularly grim milestone as Southampton set an unwanted Premier League record.

Interestingly, rumors of Still's appointment first emerged on May 19, with the club taking nearly a week to finalize terms with their new manager. The relegated side will be hoping Still can rebuild a squad that struggled immensely throughout the 2024-25 season.

Southampton's dismal campaign included a number of disappointing results, including a recent 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in March. They even managed to frustrate Pep Guardiola during a surprise draw with Manchester City, with the Spanish coach complaining about their defensive tactics and time-wasting.

Still faces significant challenges ahead, not least regarding player personnel. Talented youngster Dibling has attracted interest from Manchester United, Tottenham, and Manchester City, with reports suggesting the club wants over £100 million for his services. Will Southampton be able to retain their prized assets as they prepare for life in the Championship?

The new manager's immediate task will be to determine which players will form part of his rebuilding project and which might be sold to generate funds following the financial impact of relegation.
