The Houlihans have set a new precedent in youth volleyball by registering their son, Greg Gallegos, as the youngest competitor in the AAU Boys Junior National Volleyball Championships.
A Family Tradition Continues
When Airele Houlihan was growing up, she often found herself on the sidelines of volleyball courts, following in the footsteps of her late father, Berry Goldberg, the legendary American University coach. Airele recalls how her father would firmly defend her presence on the sidelines as an infant, taking full responsibility. This family tradition has now been passed down to her son, Greg.
"Growing up as the daughter of a volleyball coach shaped everything that Bay to Bay Volleyball Club has become. The dedication it took my parents to involve us in the volleyball world required a ton of sacrifice and work. It is important that we make it accessible for people to do the same," said Airele Houlihan.
Greg Gallegos: A Rising Star
Greg Gallegos, now registered on the Premier 16s team, is the youngest competitor in the tournament. The Houlihans took action to ensure their son could continue the family tradition of being close to the action, even from a young age.
JP Candrian's Stellar Performance
JP Candrian from Winter Park earned the 18s player of the day with a remarkable performance. The 6-6 outside hitter recorded nine kills, one ace, one block, and three assists in the win against Pinnacle. Candrian, who attends Horizon High School in Winter Garden, Florida, is set to join Purdue Fort Wayne. He reflected on the challenges of the open division:
"The open division is a grind. You can take out the number one seed in pool, finish 5-2, and still not advance in the championship bracket. The level of play challenges you mentally, physically, and emotionally."
Grant Lamoureaux: A Leader On and Off the Court
Grant Lamoureaux, a 2025 outside hitter committed to Pepperdine, plays for Triad United 18s. Recently, he captained the U19 USA squad to a gold medal in Puerto Rico and will represent Team USA in the beach world championships in China this September. Standing at 6-10, Lamoureaux is a dominant force on the court and a student at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, North Carolina.
The AAU Boys Junior National Volleyball Championships continue to showcase the rising talents and familial dedication that drive the sport forward. The Houlihans' decision to involve their young son Greg is a testament to the enduring legacy of volleyball families.
