Serhii Rebrov on the performance of the Ukrainian national team at Euro-2024: "We showed the character of our nation"
The national team of Ukraine ended its performance at Euro-2024, failing to make it to the playoffs. The head coach of the national team, Serhiy Rebrov, shared his thoughts on the matches, the team's performance and the future of Ukrainian football.
"You should evaluate my work. Unfortunately, we didn't get to the playoffs because of the first match, in which we lost to Romania. In that game, after 0:1 and 0:2, we didn't wake up," Rebrov said.
Meeting with Belgium: a tough battle
The match against the Belgian national team ended in a goalless draw. The Ukrainian team created many opportunities, but could not realize any of them.
"Today we tried to win, to create moments. There were enough moments, but we played against a top team, it was very difficult. We didn't use our chances, but there are no complaints against the players," the coach emphasized.
Gratitude for the match with Slovakia
Rebrov also noted his team's game against Slovakia, where the Ukrainians showed their character and dedication.
"I am grateful to the football players for the match against Slovakia. In the last two matches, there were no questions about the performance and character of the players. We showed the character of our nation," he said.
The future of the national team: rejuvenation or stability?
Despite the failure at Euro-2024, the head coach does not see the need for drastic changes in the team composition.
"Today we have the youngest national team at the tournament. I don't understand why we have to rejuvenate, change something now. The same Volodymyr Brazhko came, he plays in the main team. We are watching the players of the youth and Olympic national teams. This is a process," explained Rebrov.
The importance of participating in the tournament
Despite the lack of access to the playoffs, Rebrov emphasizes the importance of the presence of the Ukrainian national team at the Euro.
"This tournament is very important, we represent our country. Now it is important to show people that we are still fighting, that we need the help of Europe, of which we are a part," the coach said.
State of Ukrainian football
Ukrainian clubs continue to compete despite the difficult conditions caused by the war.
"We continue to hold our internal competitions, we continue to live. Unfortunately, many stadiums were destroyed. But now we live in such conditions," said Rebrov.
Support from Europe
Rebrov noted the importance of support from European partners.
"During the tournament, wherever we were, we felt support. This is very important, football is part of life. We also understand that now we are fighting not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole of Europe," he emphasized.
Plans for the future
The coach of the national team of Ukraine sees great potential in young players and is determined for further work.
"I saw the players - they don't have any emotions. We have a very young national team, I see prospects in the future. We have to survive this day and start working tomorrow," concluded Rebrov.
