Ronda Rousey's departure from the UFC might have left many fans bewildered, but UFC President Dana White offers a deeper insight into why her career ended the way it did.

The Rise of a Legend

Ronda Rousey burst onto the MMA scene when women's MMA was still finding its footing. Her judo skills dominated the octagon, making her an instant star. Rousey's influence wasn't just limited to her victories; she single-handedly brought women's MMA to the global stage.

The Challenges of Staying on Top

However, as Rousey was blazing trails, other fighters were evolving. "What happened with Ronda was...Ronda was very unique in that she came in and put this thing on the world stage," White explained. "This thing being women fighting. She put it on the world stage at a level that nobody else could have done it."

The Turning Point

Rousey's downfall began when her judo was no longer the unbeatable weapon it once was. Fighters like Holly Holm exposed weaknesses in her game, particularly her striking defense. Holm's head-kick knockout was a stark reminder that MMA is a constantly evolving sport. "While she was doing what she was doing, building the sport and the UFC and women, all these other women were training to beat her," White added. "She had taken so much on her shoulders at the time, it was literally impossible for her to keep growing as a fighter during that period."

White's Reflections

Despite the two-fight losing streak that marked the end of Rousey's career, White remains sympathetic. "I was sad that I wouldn't work with her on a daily basis like we did, but I felt like the timing was right," White reflected. "She had done everything she set out to do. Not just for her and her career but what she did for women in fighting in general."

The Legacy of Ronda Rousey

Rousey's career may have ended on a disappointing note, but her legacy is undeniable. She not only paved the way for future female fighters but also set a standard that continues to inspire. Her journey serves as a reminder of the relentless nature of competitive sports and the constant evolution required to stay at the top.
