The UFC offices were thrown into chaos last Thursday with the confirmation of Conor McGregor's injury, which has ruled him out of the second numbered event in June. This news comes after the controversial cancellation of the press conference in Dublin on June 3rd. Two weeks of speculation have culminated in a true tragedy for an event that will now proceed without the biggest star in UFC history, who has consistently broken attendance and revenue records.
Pereira vs. Prochazka to Salvage the Main Event
UFC President Dana White managed to secure a replacement for the main event by arranging a rematch between light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka. This bout was initially rumored to headline UFC 305 in August. Pereira, a fighter who has rapidly gained popularity and has become a double champion in less than three years, is expected to draw significant attention.
Changes in the Co-Main Event
The co-main event also faced changes as Jamahal Hill's absence led to the cancellation of his fight against Carlos Ulberg. Anthony Smith, a veteran fighter who recently defeated Vitor Petrino at UFC 301 in May, will now step in on short notice to face Ulberg. This fight has been moved to the third spot on the main card.
Ortega vs. Lopes: A Featherweight Showdown
The new co-main event will feature a featherweight clash between Brian Ortega and Diego Lopes. This bout is crucial for both fighters, as they are only a few victories away from potentially challenging for the 145-pound title. The short notice factor could make this fight an explosive contest that adds excitement to UFC 303, despite the setbacks.
Abu Dhabi Event Also Affected
The UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi also underwent a significant change with Khamzat Chimaev withdrawing due to an "extreme illness," as explained by Dana White. Middleweight prospect Ikram Aliskerov will step in on short notice to face Robert Whittaker in the main event on June 22nd. This matchup brings its own intrigue and title implications, providing a fitting replacement for the highly anticipated return of Conor McGregor.
Despite the setbacks, the UFC's matchmaking team has managed to secure compelling alternatives that promise to deliver thrilling action. The absence of McGregor undoubtedly casts a shadow over the event, but the inclusion of Pereira shifts the outlook from pessimistic to promising.
