Argentina Leave It Late to Overcome Chile
In a nail-biting finish at MetLife Stadium, Argentina clinched their place in the knockout stages of Copa América 2024 with a slender 1-0 victory over Chile. Despite a dominant performance with 21 shots compared to Chile's three, Argentina struggled to break through until the dying minutes.
"It was a tough match, but we never lost faith," said Argentina's coach.
The first half saw both teams engaging in aerial duels, with neither side creating clear opportunities. However, Argentina began to assert control, with Julián Álvarez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Nicolás González driving the attack. The crowd held its breath as Lionel Messi unleashed a long-range shot that struck the post. Messi, who received treatment on his inner thigh during the match, showed flashes of his brilliance despite his physical concerns.
Chile's resilience was epitomized by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who made three crucial saves to keep his side in contention. The match seemed destined for a draw until super-sub Lautaro Martínez found the net in the 88th minute, securing Argentina's victory and their spot in the next round.
Canada Digs Deep to Defeat 10-Man Peru
Canada marked their first win under new coach Jesse Marsch by edging out a 10-man Peru 1-0 in a dramatic encounter. The match, held in sweltering heat, delivered high drama with red cards, fainting officials, and a decisive goal.
"It was a gritty performance, but the lads showed incredible spirit," Marsch commented post-match.
Peru dominated the first half, keeping Canada pinned back. A disallowed header from Gianluca Lapadula was a sign of Peru's intent. The game took a turn when Miguel Araujo saw red for a high challenge on substitute Jacob Shaffelburg. Amidst the chaos, an assistant referee was stretchered off, adding to the tension.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Peru fought valiantly. However, it was Jonathan David who broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, capitalizing on a counter-attack led by Shaffelburg. Canada's goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau ensured the lead held, making crucial saves from Christian Cueva and Paolo Guerrero.
Canada's victory propels them into the conversation for the knockout stages, a significant achievement for the tournament debutants.
