Six-time world grappling champion Kateryna Shakalova has opened up about her life in Germany since relocating from Ukraine at the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The Combat Games winner revealed that despite the geographical change, her daily routine and focus remain largely unchanged.
'For me, nothing is different,' Shakalova explained in a recent interview. 'I lived and pursued my craft in Ukraine, and I continue to do the same here. Personally, nothing has changed.'
The Ukrainian fighter had previously declined offers to move to Germany and compete for a German club, citing language barriers and unfamiliarity with the country. However, the war eliminated those choices.
'Training in Kharkiv during the war was impossible, and staying there was unwise. So I had to accept the proposal,' she noted, adding that adapting to new circumstances isn't new to her. 'In 2014, I also had to leave everything behind and start a new life in Kharkiv—this experience isn't new to me.'
While competing for a German club, Shakalova continues to represent Ukraine internationally. According to Statbet, her grappling expertise makes her one of the most technically skilled fighters in the upcoming PFL tournament.
Shakalova is currently preparing for her PFL 2025 World Tournament semifinal matchup against Jena Bishop scheduled for June. The Ukrainian athlete previously gained significant attention across Europe following an impressive throw in a recent MMA bout.
