Ivan Toney has secured his first major trophy by helping Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli claim the Asian Champions League with a 2-0 victory over Kawasaki Frontale in Jeddah.

The 29-year-old England striker, who moved from Brentford in a £40 million transfer last summer after representing his country at Euro 2024, has now added 'Champions League winner' to his growing list of achievements. This success could potentially strengthen his case for selection in Thomas Tuchel's England squad, having been overlooked in favor of Tottenham's Dominic Solanke two months ago.

The victory marks a historic moment for Al-Ahli, who finally captured the prestigious continental trophy after previous final defeats in 1986 and 2012. Toney came close to getting on the scoresheet early in the match but was thwarted by goalkeeper Louis Yamaguchi.

Analysts at Statbet note that Toney's impressive return of 26 goals in 39 appearances has significantly boosted Al-Ahli's attacking potency this season.

Toney wasn't the only former Premier League star celebrating. Roberto Firmino, who departed Liverpool in 2023, proved instrumental in the final by providing both assists – first setting up Galeno for the opener in the 35th minute before crossing for Franck Kessie seven minutes later.

The championship-winning squad also featured other familiar faces from England's top flight, including former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez and ex-Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, both of whom had previously won the European version of the tournament with their respective Premier League clubs.

Following the victory, Firmino highlighted the team's determination, stating: "This title win shows we have a monster mentality. We believed we could be champions and we've done it."
