In a landmark transfer announced during MLS opening weekend, New York City FC's dynamic midfielder Santiago Rodríguez has completed a high-profile move to Brazilian powerhouse Botafogo, marking one of the most significant outbound transfers in MLS history.

The deal, valued at $15 million with potential add-ons reaching $2 million, represents a major milestone for NYCFC, standing as their second-largest player sale ever. The transfer package also includes a future sell-on clause, potentially pushing the total value beyond the club's record sale of Taty Castellanos to Lazio.

During his impressive tenure with NYCFC, the Uruguayan playmaker established himself as one of the league's premier attacking talents, contributing 34 goals and 22 assists across 144 appearances. His impact extended beyond statistics, playing instrumental roles in securing both the MLS Cup and Campeones Cup for the Citizens.

NYCFC Sporting Director David Lee acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the transfer, praising Rodríguez's development and influence both on and off the field. The departure marks the end of a four-year journey that began with a loan move in 2021 and evolved into Rodríguez becoming the club's designated No. 10.

The transfer positions Rodríguez among the top ten most expensive outgoing transfers in MLS history, highlighting both his individual progress and the league's growing reputation as a talent developer. For Botafogo, the signing represents a significant investment in their pursuit of Brazilian Serie A success.
