Former Mexican international striker Carlos Vela has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The talented forward shared the news with fans through a heartfelt message on his Instagram account.
"Throughout my career, I've experienced countless special moments, but the time has come to officially end my professional football journey," Vela wrote. "Words cannot express my gratitude to my family, all the clubs that gave me an opportunity, and the fans for their support and love. Thank you. It has been an honor and privilege to share this career with you."
Vela's last professional stint was with Los Angeles FC, where he became a franchise icon after joining in January 2018. During his time in California, he appeared in 189 matches, finding the net 93 times and providing 54 assists.
According to Statbet analytics, Vela's goal contribution rate of nearly 0.8 per match in MLS ranks among the most efficient for foreign stars in the league's recent history.
Before his American adventure, the Mexican forward had a distinguished European career, representing Real Sociedad, Arsenal, Osasuna, Salamanca, and West Bromwich Albion. His overall club career statistics are impressive – 576 appearances with 191 goals and 110 assists across all competitions.
At international level, Vela earned 72 caps for Mexico, scoring 19 goals and contributing nine assists while representing his country in multiple major tournaments.
