Mayu Ishikawa delivered a standout 20-point performance as Japan completed their flawless first week at the Volleyball Nations League 2025. The newly-appointed captain guided her squad to a commanding 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-21, 25-9) against the Dominican Republic in Ottawa, capping off an impressive run where the reigning silver medalists didn't drop a single set across four matches.

"We're finding our rhythm and our system is working. This gives us a strong push heading into Week 2," – middle blocker Airi Miyabe explained after the match.

Japan's dominance wasn't just visible on the scoreboard. Yoshino Sato contributed 19 points in the straight-sets win, highlighting the team's offensive depth. Their clinical display throughout the week helped them collect a perfect 12 points, placing them at the top of the standings – one point ahead of second-placed Italy.

The flawless showing in Ottawa has paid dividends in the world rankings too. Japan jumped from seventh to fifth globally after earning over 26 FIVB World Ranking points. Not bad for a week's work, right?

For the Dominican Republic, now sitting 11th with two wins from four matches, veteran Gaila González led their efforts with 14 points, but it wasn't enough against Japan's organized system.

Elsewhere in Ottawa, the hosts delighted local fans when Canada mounted a gutsy 3-2 comeback against world champions Serbia, powered by Kiera Van Ryk's explosive 34-point performance. Meanwhile, the Netherlands finished their week with a 3-0 sweep of Bulgaria, climbing to eighth place.

The women's VNL action will resume June 18-22, with matches scheduled across three locations – Türkiye, China, and Serbia. Can Japan maintain their perfect record through the next stage of competition?
