D.C. United was one of the original MLS franchises founded in 1994 and quickly became its flagship team. They’ve won 4 MLS Cups, 4 Supporters’ Shields, and 3 U.S. Open Cups — tying them for the most trophies in U.S. soccer history.
They were the first American club to win the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup and the only one to win the Copa Interamericana against the South American champions.
Legendary defender Eddie Pope was twice named to the MLS Best XI, made over 250 MLS appearances, and played in three World Cups.
Notable supporter groups include La Barra Brava, founded by Latino fans in 1995, and the Screaming Eagles, who lead chants in the standing section at Audi Field.
Nashville SC was founded in May 2016, played two seasons in the USL, and joined MLS as an expansion team in 2020.
