Chelsea's Ben Chilwell is setting his sights on a more consistent and successful 2024/25 campaign, after a season marred by injuries and fluctuating performances. The left-back, who has grown into a leadership role within the squad, believes the Blues have the potential to compete for top honors if they can maintain the form shown in the closing stages of the last season.

Chilwell's Injury Setbacks and Team's Struggles

Chilwell, along with several other key players, faced injury woes that disrupted Chelsea's lineup throughout the 2023/24 season. This inconsistency was reflected in the team's performances, making it challenging for the Blues to find their rhythm on the pitch.

"It was kind of the question mark the whole season, us having that consistency as a team," Chilwell admitted. "I think that, especially in the last month, it looked like it had turned a corner, which is massive because we know inside the changing room that on our day we can beat anyone."

Strong Finish to Secure European Football

Despite the setbacks, Chelsea managed to finish the season on a high note, securing five consecutive Premier League wins. This late surge ensured their spot in European competitions next season, providing a much-needed confidence boost for the squad.

Leadership Role and Future Aspirations

Chilwell, who was part of the Chelsea squad that won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup, is now one of the few remaining players from those victorious campaigns. With the departure of Thiago Silva, Chilwell feels a heightened responsibility to guide the younger members of the team.

"My role here has evolved a lot," Chilwell explains. "When I joined I was 23 years old and probably one of the younger players in the squad. So I went onto the pitch with a bit more freedom, because I had the older, experienced players around me who were guiding me. But now I'm the one welcoming new lads and that has been good for me personally and it’s good to grow that way as a footballer with the leadership side of things."

Preparing for the USA Tour 2024

As Chelsea prepares for their pre-season tour of the USA, Chilwell is focused on laying the groundwork for a trophy-winning season. The tour includes matches against Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, and Real Madrid, providing a robust test for the squad.

Chilwell's experience and leadership will be crucial as the team aims to build on the momentum from the end of last season. The left-back is optimistic about the future and eager to help Chelsea return to their winning ways.

"Next season I want to win trophies with Chelsea. I'm fortunate enough to be one of the players here that's won trophies here before and I want the other players to be able to experience that as well. That's the next step that this group needs to take."
