In an exclusive interview, Bayern Munich's legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge shared his insights on the upcoming UEFA Champions League clash with Real Madrid and expressed his views on the controversial Super League proposal.
The Eternal Rivalry Heats Up Again
Rummenigge, who has experienced the heat of Bayern-Madrid encounters both on the pitch and as an executive, expects a challenging return leg at the Bernabéu. He praised Joshua Kimmich's performance in the first leg and emphasized the need to avoid overhyping young talents like Jamal Musiala, warning that unrealistic expectations could hinder their development.
"The key is to survive in the Bernabéu, which is tough but doable, as proven by Leipzig and Guardiola's recent tests against Madrid," Rummenigge remarked.
A Plea for Football Unity
While expressing respect for Real Madrid's president Florentino Pérez, Rummenigge urged him to reconsider the Super League plans, suggesting that unity under the UEFA family is essential for the future of football. He highlighted the financial disparities caused by the Premier League's wealth, identifying it as a common problem for clubs like Bayern and Madrid.
Looking Beyond the Scoreline
Rummenigge also took time to reflect on the Bundesliga's international success this season and the impressive turnaround by Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. He sees the league's performance as a positive sign for German football and its broader competitiveness on the European stage.
"The Bundesliga's rise to gain a fifth Champions League spot is a testament to its quality, and Leverkusen's success under Xabi Alonso is well-deserved," he added.
The Road Ahead for Bayern
With a focus on the future, Rummenigge called for Bayern to return to its roots of stability and discretion, especially in the transfer market and coaching appointments. He fondly recalled the times of Uli Hoeness and Franz Beckenbauer, urging for continuity in the club's leadership.
"We need to get back to the Bayern way of doing things, which has always been characterized by continuity," he concluded.
As the interview wrapped up, Rummenigge's passion for the game and his club was evident, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the storied rivalry between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
