The Phoenix Suns have secured a key piece of their roster by signing free agent Royce O'Neale to a four-year, $44 million contract. The 31-year-old forward, who joined the Suns in a mid-season trade from the Brooklyn Nets, has become an integral part of the team's rotation.
O'Neale's Impact on the Suns
O'Neale's addition to the Suns last season brought immediate results. He seamlessly transitioned into his role, often being one of the first players off the bench and occasionally starting. In his 30 games with Phoenix, O'Neale averaged 25.1 minutes per game, contributing 8.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and shooting an impressive 37.6% from three-point range.
The Trade That Brought O'Neale to Phoenix
The Suns acquired O'Neale in a complex three-team deal involving the Brooklyn Nets and Memphis Grizzlies. As part of the trade, Phoenix also acquired David Roddy from the Grizzlies. In exchange, the Suns sent Chimezie Metu, Yuta Watanabe, and a 2026 first-round pick swap to Memphis for Roddy, and moved Keita Bates-Diop, Jordan Goodwin, and three future second-round picks to the Nets.
A Look at the Numbers
O'Neale's overall performance last season, including his time with Brooklyn, saw him average 7.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. His consistent play and versatility have made him a valuable asset for the Suns as they look to build on their recent successes.
Future Moves for the Suns
While O'Neale has committed to Phoenix, the team faces decisions with other reserve players. Drew Eubanks, Eric Gordon, and Josh Okogie have opted to test free agency by not exercising their contract options. This opens up opportunities for the Suns to explore new additions or focus on retaining other key players.
What's Next for Phoenix?
The signing of Royce O'Neale is a significant step for the Suns as they aim to solidify their roster for the upcoming seasons. His experience and skill set will be crucial as the team strives for deeper playoff runs and, ultimately, a championship.
"Royce O'Neale's commitment to the Suns is a testament to our vision and ambition," said an insider close to the team.
As the Suns continue to make strategic moves, fans can expect an exciting season ahead filled with potential and promise.
