The group stage of the first set of four teams for Euro ended yesterday, and the match between Germany and Switzerland became a real football spectacle. Germany and Switzerland fought for the top spot in the group, and although the game ended 1-1, the Swiss looked much stronger.
Battle for first place: Germany vs Switzerland
The match started with high activity of both teams, which is not surprising, because three points and the first place in the group were at stake. Germany tried to dominate positionally, actively using the flanks for passes to Kroos and Gündogan. Switzerland, on the other hand, chose a strategy of counterattacks, hoping for quick breakthroughs by Ndoe and Embolo.
Germany created the first dangerous moment. Andrich dared to shoot, but the goalkeeper Sommer could not react qualitatively due to a foul by Musiala, and VAR canceled the goal. Gündogan constantly created danger, attracting the attention of defenders even without the ball.
Neuer's mistake and Switzerland's goal
The first goal in the match was due to a mistake by Neuyer. The goalkeeper of Germany unsuccessfully threw the ball at Kimmich, which led to a clipping. Froyler sent a simple cross into the penalty area, where Ndoe hit the spot. The German goalkeeper could not react in time, and Switzerland took the lead.
"This goal opened up courage in Ndoe: when the striker pushed Rüdiger himself, it inspired him to do more."
Desperate attempts by Germany
The conceded goal was a shock for Germany, who had controlled the game until that point. The players tried to regain control, but Switzerland defended well. Akanji and Froyler successfully removed the ball from the head and feet of the German players, leaving no chance for implementation.
Second half: Nagelsmann has a lot to think about
After the break, the game became more open. Both teams moved quickly from penalty to penalty, finding plenty of space. The Swiss used separate transmissions, but could not realize their moments due to mistakes on the slippery turf.
Germany couldn't organize an attack through the middle as Kroos was effectively ruled out of the game thanks to the tight work of Frouler and Xhaka. Nagelsmann was forced to make substitutions, but this only added to the problems.
The turning point and Fühlkrug's goal
"One of the turning points was the substitutions. Nagelsmann released defenders to free up Rüdiger to attack, but it didn't help."
Switzerland continued to defend well, but in the final minutes of the match Fühlkrug converted their only chance to equalize. Germany won the group but got plenty of food for thought.
