Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum signed a new five-year, $314 million contract with the team. This is the largest deal in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Biggest contract in NBA history

"This is a new chapter in the history of our team and the NBA in general. We are proud that Jason is staying with us for many years," commented the Celtics general manager.

Signing this contract confirms Tatum's status as one of the best players in modern basketball. The 203cm forward, who was selected by the Celtics with the third overall pick in 2017, has developed into one of the NBA's biggest stars.

Tatum's successes on the floor

The 26-year-old led Boston to its 18th NBA title with a Finals victory over the Dallas Mavericks. In five games of the Finals series, Tatum averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists. His ability to dominate at both ends of the court made him an indispensable part of the team.

"Jason is the heart and soul of our team. His leadership qualities and unparalleled skill inspire us to new victories," the head coach of "Celtics" noted.

Impact on the team and the future

This contract also has a significant impact on the team's financial structure. Every player in Boston's starting lineup is now under contract through at least the 2025-2026 season. This season alone, the contracts of Tatum, Brown, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis will total $198.5 million.

"We have created a team capable of fighting for titles for many more years. This is a big step forward for our club," added the general manager.

Tatum and Brown tandem

It is interesting that previously the largest contract in NBA history belonged to Tatum's teammate Jaylen Brown, who signed an agreement for $287 million. Together, they have created perhaps the best tandem in the league, making the Celtics one of the main contenders for the title in the coming years.

"Jason and I share the same goal of winning titles for Boston. This contract is just the beginning of our journey," Brown said.

A look at the Olympics

After winning a gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Tatum is also named to Team USA for this summer's Paris Olympics. His international experience gives him a confidence and skill that will definitely translate to his NBA game.

Jayson Tatum signing a new contract is not only a big event for the Boston Celtics, but also for the entire league. This shows that clubs are willing to invest in their stars to ensure stability and future success.
