Boxing fans were shocked when former heavyweight champion Buster Douglas weighed in on the current state of heavyweight boxing, delivering a stark reality check to Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. The two British heavyweights, who have both faced defeats at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk, were not spared from Douglas's critical eye.
Buster Douglas Questions Fury and Joshua's Stamina and Skill
In a candid interview, Douglas, who famously defeated Mike Tyson in 1990 in what is still considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, expressed his doubts about Fury and Joshua's capabilities. "They have skills, but as far as endurance, I don't know. They don't seem to be able to withstand power and aggressiveness," Douglas remarked.
"I speak to my trainer about today's heavyweights and he has a low opinion of them and says they [Fury and AJ] wouldn't have been in the top 30 in my era, I have to agree," he added.
Upcoming Bouts: Joshua vs. Dubois and Fury vs. Usyk
As the dust settles from their recent defeats, both Fury and Joshua are gearing up for their upcoming fights. Joshua is expected to take on Daniel Dubois in September at Wembley Stadium for the IBF heavyweight world title. This title, currently held by Usyk, is likely to be stripped from him in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Fury and Usyk are set for a rematch on December 21, but the undisputed world titles will not be on the line.
Douglas's Bold Predictions for Future Matchups
Douglas didn't stop at critiquing their past performances. He also made bold predictions about future matchups. "Right now I think AJ beats Fury," Douglas stated confidently. He elaborated that while Fury is not necessarily on the decline, his ability to withstand force has diminished over time. "It's a strong possibility that AJ would knock Fury out, I think he would. He would definitely take Fury out. It would not go the distance."
"AJ-Usyk is right now also a good one. I'd say AJ beats Fury and AJ-Usyk is 50-50," Douglas continued. He believes Joshua is on a mission and has made significant changes to his approach.
The Future of Heavyweight Boxing
As the heavyweight division continues to evolve, the insights from a legend like Douglas add a layer of intrigue and speculation. Will Joshua prove Douglas right and reclaim his dominance? Or will Fury defy the odds once again? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the world will be watching.
