Jannik Sinner will face fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the 2025 US Open quarterfinals as he continues his title defense campaign. The world number one has been ruthlessly efficient throughout the tournament, dismantling opponents with clinical precision on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows.
"Facing a compatriot at this stage of a Grand Slam creates a special atmosphere, but once we step on court, it's just another match I need to win," – Sinner might say about the upcoming all-Italian clash.
Sinner has been nearly unstoppable in 2025, already claiming both the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles, while also reaching the Roland Garros final. The 24-year-old currently sits at number 2 in the ATP Race rankings, trailing only Carlos Alcaraz who has already secured his semifinal spot.
His journey to the quarterfinals speaks volumes about his current form. After crushing Czech player Kopriva 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round, he followed with another straightforward win against Australia's Popyrin (6-3, 6-2, 6-2). Things got a bit complicated against 27th seed Denis Shapovalov, where Sinner dropped the first set before regaining control to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
Interestingly, his fourth-round match against Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik was perhaps his most dominant performance yet – a crushing 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 victory that took just over an hour.
Lorenzo Musetti, seeded 10th at the tournament, earned his quarterfinal spot by overwhelming Spain's Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16. The rising Italian star now faces his toughest test yet against his higher-ranked countryman.
The head-to-head record between these two Italians currently stands at 2-0 in Sinner's favor. Worth noting, this will be their first-ever Grand Slam encounter – and five-set matches can sometimes create unexpected dynamics. Can Musetti find a formula to upset the defending champion?
Their quarterfinal showdown is scheduled for the early hours of Thursday, September 4 (around 2:30 AM Spanish time), following the Muchova-Osaka match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
With a potential semifinal against Alcaraz possibly awaiting the winner, both Italians have everything to play for. Will Sinner continue his march toward a third Grand Slam this season, or will Musetti produce the upset of the tournament?
