Cristiano Ronaldo played through injury to help Portugal win the UEFA Nations League final against Spain in Munich, lifting another trophy with his national team after a penalty shootout victory.
"This victory brought us a lot of joy. I'm happy for this generation that deserved this win, for our families. My children, wife, brother, and friends came here. A victory for Portugal is always a special reason for pride," Ronaldo shared after the match.
The Portuguese captain revealed he had been dealing with an injury during the game but pushed himself to perform for his country. He admitted feeling discomfort even during the warm-up but was determined to play in the title match.
"I already felt something wasn't right during the warm-up, but for the national team, if I had to break my leg, I would have done it. It was a title match, I had to play," the forward explained.
For Ronaldo, winning with Portugal carries a special significance that surpasses his numerous club achievements. Despite playing for various teams throughout his career, representing his homeland evokes unique emotions.
"I've won many titles at club level, but nothing compares to winning with Portugal. It's a feeling of duty fulfilled and great joy," he emphasized.
The veteran striker also expressed pride in Portugal's accomplishments as a small nation with big ambitions. Being captain of this generation is something he considers a great honor.
Interestingly, Ronaldo had warm words for coach Roberto Martinez, highlighting the Spaniard's dedication to Portuguese success despite his nationality.
"I'm very happy for him, for being Spanish, for giving everything for our country. This is a title we've already won before, but our motivation is our hunger for victories," Ronaldo stated.
When asked about his future plans, the forward focused only on the immediate term, mentioning he needs proper rest after playing through his injury. Will the 39-year-old continue his international career? For now, he's just celebrating another triumph with his beloved Portugal.
