Lucas Vázquez has signed with Bayer Leverkusen after leaving Real Madrid, committing to the German club until June 2027. The 34-year-old Spanish right-back will wear the number '21' shirt under new manager Erik ten Hag as he begins his Bundesliga adventure.
"I'm eager to continue my career at Bayer Leverkusen, the club that Xabi Alonso and my Madrid teammate Dani Carvajal have told me so much about," Vázquez stated to the club media channels.
The veteran defender brings impressive credentials to Germany, having collected 23 trophies during his time with the Spanish giants. Interestingly, Vázquez cited his conversations with Leverkusen officials as crucial in his decision-making process.
"My discussions with the management confirmed what I had been told: Bayer Leverkusen is absolutely focused on winning, hungry and targeting the most ambitious goals. This attitude matches my expectations, and I'm looking forward to fighting for new successes with Leverkusen," he explained.
Simon Rolfes, Leverkusen's sporting director, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, highlighting the wealth of experience Vázquez brings to the squad.
"We're signing a player with tremendous experience who has won everything there was to win with Real Madrid over the past decade," Rolfes remarked.
The director further praised Vázquez's technical abilities and tactical awareness, adding: "He has great technique, is tactically very skilled, an excellent playmaker and strategist. Lucas will have an enormous influence on our game thanks to his footballing finesse and vast experience—he'll become a pillar of our team."
Can the Spanish veteran help Leverkusen build on their recent success? The club clearly believes his championship mentality will be a valuable asset as they push for honors under ten Hag's leadership.
