Heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua is exploring an investment opportunity in his hometown football club Watford FC, currently competing in the Championship division of English football.
The former two-time world heavyweight champion, who was born and still resides in Watford, a suburb of London, has confirmed discussions about purchasing a stake in the club. This potential investment would add to Joshua's growing portfolio outside the boxing ring.
"When opportunities arise, I invest in various assets. I try not to spend money carelessly," Joshua stated. "If the team gets promoted to the Premier League, we could establish a shop near the stadium – there would be plenty of visitors."
According to Statbet analysis, Championship clubs that secure promotion to the Premier League can expect revenue increases of over 100 million pounds, making such investments potentially lucrative for sports personalities.
Joshua clarified that the deal is still in preliminary stages, noting: "We're only discussing it at this point."
Watford FC finished their most recent Championship campaign in 14th position, falling short of promotion contention. The Hornets last competed in the Premier League during the 2021-22 season.
This wouldn't be Joshua's first venture into sports team ownership, as he previously became an investor in Alpine Formula 1 team, demonstrating his diverse approach to financial investments beyond his boxing career.
